Spring 2020 Hair Trends You Will Want To Try

Hollie Shirley / Hair & Skincare Editor

Its officially 2020, January is officially over, which means spring is a little over a month away which means all of the year’s biggest hair trends are about to pop off on your social feeds. Below, we have listed our favourites of the best spring 2020 hair trends and how to recreate them.

Face framing tendrils (braided or otherwise)

The 90’s trend of face-framing layers isn’t going anywhere for 2020. Braided tendrils aren’t exactly a new style, but they will be showing up more and are easy to do providing you know how to braid. Worn with the rest of your hair pulled back in a high bun or hidden within the rest of your tousled hair, this is an easy and stylish update on a classic.

Silky accessories on messy ‘dos.

Last year’s crowns of padded headbands are being put on the back seat to make room for the trend of silky sleek accessories paired with messy loose updos. Opt for a stretchy satin headband with a low messy bun,  or pull your hair up into a messy topknot and tie with a satin scrunchie or bow-tie band letting the ends hand loosely with some face-framing wisps around your face.

Bright hair colours

Spring is a great time to refresh your hair colour and opt for a lighter brighter hue. You’re bound to see pretty much every colour of the rainbow across social media, from pastel pinks to bright blues, purple tones and coppers. Rose pinks were big in 2019 and spring 2020 will see this hue pop back up again. If you can’t afford the money or time for a salon colour, experiment with semi-permanent colours to find your signature shade.

Pearls, jewels and crystal accessories

Those cute little barrettes and slides of 2019 are going supersized for spring, making a move from an accent piece to a statement accessory. From jewel-encrusted flowers to super-sized pearl barrettes, crystal hair slides and spiral hairpins (remember those from the early 2000’s), accessories will amp up any hairdo from buns, adorned box braids, to slicked-back parts.

Slicked back bouncy ponytails

Move aside topknots of 2019, the ponytail is taking centre stage for spring 2020. Think slicked-back perfect ponytails at the centre back of your head secured with elastic, the ends softly curled with a curling iron and brushed out to create soft bends. Major 50’s vibes with a 2020 upgrade.

Fringes big and small

From tiny 60’s micro fringes to the Farrah Fawcett bouncy curtain bangs, the fringe is a big accessory for spring 2020. Worn swept to the side with a deep side parting, or teased crown paired with blunt baby bangs, there is a fringe that will suit every face shape. I would highly recommend trying a faux fringe or two first before you get your own hair cut to find the best one to suit our face shape and hair type. When it comes to styling, make the fringe the star of the show by lightly teasing your crown and scooping your hair back into a French twist, half ponytail, bun, whatever takes your fancy. Just make it all about those bangs.

Giant Finger Waves

Let’s face it, finger waves will never not be a style, but to really make an impression make them well, huge. Ultra-shiny and glossy, giant finger waves feel both retro and updated for spring. The style couldn’t be easier to replicate at home.  Comb a generous amount of moose or gel through your damp hair and create a deep side part. Using a comb and your fingers, create a deep wave one by one down your hair and hold in place with sectioning slides. Ensure your hair is completely dry and set with a fixing spray before removing the clips.

Messy Half up topknots

Half up topknots? So 2019. Switch your style up with a messy half-up twisted topknot with curly messy textured hair – you really can’t get this wrong, you have permission and freedom to get messy with your bun here. Section your hair from ear to ear and then split that section in half. Twist each of these inwards to your crown and pin in place. Then twist and coil the ends into a bun and pin in place to keep it loose.
