The Top 2019 Hair Trends You Will Love

Hollie Shirley / Hair & Skincare Editor

2018 was big for hair. We were embracing our 90’s scrunchies, butterfly clips and other accessories, bobs were reigning supreme, and everyone looked like they had wet hair.

Experts are saying 2019 is going to continue the theme of the nostalgia feels, with oversized velvet scrunchies all over the Marc Jacobs catwalk, and the cool London girl chin length bob coming in strong, and colors ranging for beautiful pastels, to bold block colors. Here are some of the big hair trends we are lusting over (and you will be too!)

The Blunt bob (or lob)

This look is being served everywhere and is topped to be the style according to the experts behind the chair. The blunt bob is the classic cool girl cut and it seems to be getting shorter every year, with the current go-to style being somewhere between the chin and ear length.

The lob, (long bob) is getting a restyle going fully blunt, and french cool girl chic bobs with blunt bangs are set to be a big thing.  If you are planning to rock this look, make sure you consult with your stylist about what lengths will suit your face shape, and do it with your head held high.

Accessories all over your head

Scrunchies, butterfly clips, diamante hair slides and headbands, they’re coming back and staying. Think dark jewel tones transitioning into brighter colours as the weather warms up, teaming them with the classic half up half down styles for a cute yet chic style.

More seems to be, well, more, with models on the catwalk sporting a number of strategically placed hair accessories. The best part of this trend is a lot of high street stores are coming out with their own take on the catwalk versions, so it will be an inexpensive accessory to add to your style.

The half up half down

The high slick Ariana Grande ponytail was huge in 2018, with faux ponytails being tasked in adding some height and volume to our pony. 2019 will see this continue with this twist on the classic. This elevated look involves giving some structure to the top of the head in the form of a ponytail, bun or even a strategic part to give the top a little more volume.

These looks are great because they give you a high fashion vibe without being too over the top and there’s a ton of different style options, so you’ll never get bored.

Red hair is reigning supreme

Red hair had its time in the spotlight in autumn 2018, and that is set to continue into 2019. More clients are requesting deep dark reds in the salon, and although red isn’t the easiest colour to maintain, it is definitely worth it. Shades of strawberry add a subtle lift of colour to blondes, emphasising tones with light reds to add dimension and depth. Copper tones look great as a lowlight if you don’t want to commit to a full-on colour change. Beautiful auburn sunset of gold and reds looks stunning on darker skin.

The ultimate red, think red velvet vibes, can go any way you want. You can go for a subtle red flush through darker hair to add an eye-catching wash of colour, or if you want to be bold and brave, a striking pillar box red will really stand out from the crowd. Just be prepared to maintain it with touch up colours ever 6 weeks or so.

The Blow out is back

2018 was all about undone, messy beach vibe hair, however top stylists are suggesting 2019 will be the year we see the sleek, glossy blowout come back into the limelight. With Dyson bringing us the airwrap in 2018, this clever tool will help to reinforce this style by letting you create the blowout of your dreams at home. But let’s face it, nothing beats the feeling of a fresh blow out at the salon. This will be with either super sleek, straight hair with a few waves to add body, or glossy done up waves, the ultimate red carpet look.

Textured curls

Curlfriends, it’s time to embrace your natural curl pattern and then some. Think long layered cuts, curly bangs, and added height and volume.  Beautiful big voluminous natural curls are all the rage for 2019. Think deeply nourished ringlets and shaggy curl cuts. We have been playing with the dropped tong for some years now and to me looks old fashioned, it’s all about a tighter curl to the roots and a more carefree vibe.
